The Rise of Sim Racing in Motorsport

In recent years, simulator motor racing has become increasingly popular, with many enthusiasts competing in virtual racing series around the world. While it may seem like a simple video game, simulator motor racing requires a high level of skill, focus, and physical fitness to compete at the highest level. In this article, we will explore how to train your body and mind to compete in simulator motor racing series.

Sim racing has never been more popular. With cutting-edge simulators, esports competitions, and the rise of drivers transitioning from virtual to real-world racing, the question remains: can sim racing truly replicate the physical demands of real motorsport?

A recent study examined this by analyzing the physiological strain experienced by professional drivers in a real race versus a simulated one. The results? There is a significant gap between virtual and real-world racing regarding physical demand. Let’s break it down.

Study Breakdown: Real vs. Simulated Racing

Study Design & Setup

This study focused on five professional IMSA GTD drivers (aged 38.0 ± 5.1 years, racing for 8 years) who participated in the 2018 Sahlen’s 6 Hours of The Glen endurance race. The drivers completed 1-hour stints in the real race, and then replicated their race conditions in a high-fidelity simulator while wearing full protective gear in a temperature-controlled room.

Key Findings: The Physiological Differences

The study revealed some major differences between real racing and simulation:

  • Heart Rate: Real racing = 159 BPM (85% max HR) vs. Sim = 112 BPM
  • Core Temp: Real racing = 38.5°C, significantly higher than in sim racing
  • Breathing Rate: Higher in real racing due to increased metabolic demand
  • Physiological Strain Index (PSI): 10X higher in real racing

What does this mean? While simulators train cognitive and technical skills, they don’t replicate the extreme physical demands of real motorsport. But why?

The Missing Components: What Simulators Can’t Replicate

🔴 G-Forces & Physical Strain – In a real race car, drivers endure 3-5G forces through every corner and braking zone. This means their neck, core, and limbs are under constant tension—something a static simulator setup can’t replicate.

🔥 Heat Stress & Fatigue – A race car’s cockpit reaches extreme temperatures, increasing core temperature, sweat rate, and overall fatigue. Without this stress, a sim driver’s endurance is far less tested.

🧠 Psycho-Emotional Stress – Real-world drivers face split-second decisions, high-risk overtakes, and mechanical failures. The stakes are far greater, adding mental strain and adrenaline spikes not found in sim racing.

What This Means for Driver Fitness & Performance

A second study (McKnight et al., 2019) further emphasized the extreme physical requirements of motorsport. F1 drivers experience:

  • Heart rates between 65-90% of their max HR for an entire race
  • Core temperatures between 38-39.8°C
  • Caloric burns equivalent to running a half-marathon
  • Massive braking forces requiring up to 78kg of leg force per corner

To handle this, elite-level drivers train for endurance, strength, reaction time, and mental performance—something sim drivers need to incorporate if they want to transition successfully.

How Sim Drivers Can Bridge the Gap to Real Racing

For young drivers making the leap from sim to real-world racing, physical preparation is key. Here’s how to do it:

🏋️‍♂️ Build Strength for G-Forces: Focus on neck, core, and upper body training to withstand lateral and braking forces.

🔥 Endurance Training: Use low-intensity, long-duration cardio (cycling, running) to improve cardiovascular efficiency, then incorporate high-intensity training to simulate race conditions.

🧠 Mental & Reaction Training: Implement hand-eye coordination drills, reaction-based training, and cognitive stress tests to handle real-world pressure.

🌡️ Heat Acclimation Training: Use sauna sessions, overdressed cardio, or simulated heat environments to prepare for extreme temperatures inside a race car.
