Miami Grand Prix was the most physically demanding race of the entire year last year. The temperature will be high 20s / low 30s but what is an extra burden is the humidity which will be 60-70%. To add to it, rather than racing at night like Singapore, we race at 15:30 so get solar heating as well.

Extra Physical Demands on the F1 Drivers;
The Heat, the Humidity
Humidity is an extra burden as it does not allow cooling from sweat. Last year drivers lost 3-4kg + equating to over 5% of body mass, which in performance terms would be roughly around a 30% deficit in working capacity.
The suits they wear also do not help with this, and fully fire retardant clothing from boxers to suits, creates a number of micro-climates which store heat. When exercising, driving or performing in the heat, skin blood flow and sweat rate increase to allow for heat dissipation to the surrounding area. These thermoregulatory adjustments although extremely efficient increase the physiological strain on the body. This is not efficient in drivers given their protective attire. They cannot cool as they are fully covered, leading to increases in heart rate to increase cardiac output and a redirection of blood from the organs to try and provide adequate blood slow for thermoregulation. Ladells (1957) suggested that an increase in core temperature of 1 degree Celsius could increase heart rate by 25bpm. This creates what’s called a cardiac drift and can lead to early fatigue (Galloway and Maughen 1997) and the performance deficits discussed above.

These drops in performance include a deterioration in dexterity, coordination, ability to remain alert and ability to process and make quick decisions. All skills that are extremely vital for an F1 driver whether that’s the dexterity to press the buttons on the steering wheel or a decision on a line of overtake it could and make or break a race result or potential collision.
Drivers will have to be at their peak cardiovascular fitness to maintain concentration throughout this race. To help with that a key focus for us this race weekend will be keeping core temperature down through cooling aids such as plunge pools, cooling vests, ice drinks etc. Hydration will also play a key part in replenishing those stores.
The race itself is 5.41km circuit with 19 corners and a top speed of approximately 340kph. It’s high speed with some technical corners and some high lateral G force as turns 4 through to 8 produce approximately 4.5-6Gs of force. There is also elevation changes throughout the circuit with the track heading over an exit ramp and under various flyovers across uneven ground, and the turn 14-15 chicane has an uphill approach which drops down on exit. This presents extra challenge for the neck, as elevation change creates axial compression and requires a reliance on the deeper neck muscles to dissipate force.
