The “Weird” Training Mistake That Holds So Many Athletes Back

May 2, 2025 | Fitness, Marathon, Recovery

Distant Hills Guest House B&B Spean Bridge

As a coach, I work with driven, goal-oriented athletes. The kind of people who never miss a session, always follow the plan, and take pride in ticking every box.

At first glance, that sounds ideal. And in many ways, it is.

But here’s the weird training mistake I see time and time again — one I used to make myself:

Athletes sticking to a plan with total discipline…
without learning anything from it.

Ticking the Boxes — and Going Nowhere

Let’s say you’re training for a marathon.

  • You run the same weekly mileage
  • Hit the same pace targets
  • Stick to the same routes
  • Train with the same group

And it feels like you’re making progress — you’re consistent, you’re committed, and you’re working hard.

But then race day comes… and your time is the same as last time.

What gives?

When I Discovered the Difference

It wasn’t until I started working with elite athletes that I realised what was missing.

These top performers weren’t just training hard — they were training smart.

Every session had a purpose.
Every workout was a test.
Every run brought back useful data.

They weren’t just ticking boxes — they were running experiments.

A Real Example: The 3:45 Marathoner

One athlete came to me stuck at 3:45 for her marathon time. She was one of the most diligent runners I’ve ever met.

She trained hard.
She followed her plan.
She did everything right.

But she wasn’t improving.

When we started working together, it was clear she hadn’t learned much from her training — because she hadn’t been looking for feedback.

So we made one big change:
We turned her training into a personal laboratory.

How Experimental Training Works

Instead of just completing sessions, we started asking questions:

  • What happens if you try negative splits instead of even pacing?
  • How does your energy change with different fuelling strategies?
  • What mental cues help you recover faster from a tough rep?

We tested everything:

  • Pacing strategies
  • Nutrition timing
  • Mental focus and race mindset
  • Sleep and recovery habits
  • Footwear and terrain

Every run became an experiment.
Every race became a data point.
Every week, we refined the approach.

And something amazing happened…

Same Effort. Smarter Strategy. Better Results.

Six months later, that athlete ran a 3:28 marathon.

She didn’t increase her weekly mileage.
She didn’t suddenly start training harder.

She trained smarter.

And the best part?
This approach works at every level.

Whether you’re chasing a sub-4:00, a BQ time, or just trying to get unstuck after months of plateaus — the secret isn’t always more training.

It’s more insight.

Because the difference between good and great?
It’s not more effort.
It’s more awareness.

To your peak performance,
Brad

P.S. Remember that 3:45 marathoner? With six months of experimental training, she ran 3:28. Same work ethic. New approach. Transformative results.
